An active threat occurs when an individual or group is actively engaged in violent or threatening actions that pose an immediate danger to the safety of the community. This may include incidents such as an active shooter or armed attacker. Outlined here are actions to be taken when encountering an active threat.

Emergency Actions

In the event of such an incident, emergency actions, including Run, Hide, Fight, will be implemented to protect the community and respond effectively. Follow these steps when a Run, Hide, Fight is required

Run

  • If there is an escape path, attempt to evacuate even if others choose not to.
  • Assist others in escaping, if possible.
  • Move in the opposite direction of the attacker.
  • Leave belongings behind; if you must take items only grab the essentials (keys, wallet, phone),
  • Remember Emergency exits and windows
  • Don鈥檛 hesitate. Seconds matter.
  • Do not stop until you are sure you are in a safe location.

Once you are away from the situation and safe, call Public Safety at 312-808-6363

Hide

If unable to evacuate safely, find a place to hide. Hiding places should be out of sight, provide protection (e.g., behind or under a large object), and should not restrict your movements.
Other ways to conceal your location include:

  • Lock and Barricade doors
  • Turn off Lights
  • Silence your cell phone
  • Stay clear of windows
  • Remain quiet
  • Determine a defense plan

Fight

Only if your life is in danger and as a last resort should you fight.

  • Arm yourself with items readily available as improvised weapons (e.g., chairs, bottles, equipment).
  • Work with a group rather than on your own, if possible.
  • Commit to your actions and act with aggression.
  • Remember you are fighting for your life. Don鈥檛 fight fair.

If the threat is incapacitated and you are safe, contact Public Safety at 312-808-6363
